Mechanical Design Engineer – Robotic Food Equipment

Mechanical Design Engineer – Robotic Food Equipment

Are you looking for an opportunity to work on clean sheet mechanism designs? Are you passionate about food and automation? Our client is a VC-backed startup looking for a motivated mechanical design engineer that is ready to take on the design and refinement of robotic food processing systems. In addition, this role will be involved in all phases of product development including but not limited to: customer research, prototyping, and working with manufacturers for production. You will work with an interdisciplinary team to negotiate business, product, quality, safety, controls, and manufacturing requirements. We move fast - we have an in-house prototyping shop and use Agile project management so that we can quickly iterate. Efficiently testing systems and knowing when you have collected just enough data to make a good decision is key to success. You will be expected to collaborate or work independently as needed and participate in the evolution of company procedures.

Here’s a bit more on your day-to-day. You will…

  • Drive process development and sub-assembly design from concept to manufacture

  • Regularly collaborate with other engineers and designers among multiple disciplines including conducting and participating in design reviews

  • Conduct design work, experimentation, and prototyping with minimal direction

  • Design low cost and self-jigging components (determinant assembly or poka yoke)

  • Test and analyze systems to qualify systems, find areas of improvement, and identify risks.

  • Source purchased and manufactured components

  • Manufacture and assemble test articles and pre-production samples

  • Assist with creating user and maintenance guides

We would love to hear from anyone who is as passionate about this as we are, but we are particularly looking for the following:

  • BS or higher in Food, Chemical, Mechanical, Systems or Process Engineering

  • 3+ years of professional experience in new product development (NPD/NPI), especially consumer products, mass manufacturing and mechanism design

  • Understanding of material properties of foods, plastics, elastomers, and metals

  • Proficiency in SolidWorks or other parametric CAD software

Bonus points if you have…

  • Experience designing food processing equipment

  • Experience in robotics and food processing

  • Experience with hand tools and machine tools

Physical Demands

  • Occasionally move 25 lbs.

  • Use hand and machine tools

Our client is committed to building a team that represents a variety of backgrounds, perspectives, and skills. The more inclusive we are, the better our work will be.
